Many of our people desire to learn the culture of their forefathers and one main question they often ask is how did they dress. The heavenly Father gave all Israelites a dress code according to:
Numbers 15:37-40: “And the Lord Spake unto Moses, saying ”
verse 38: “speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the border of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue:”
verse 39: “And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the Lord, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:”
Verse 40: “That ye may remember and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.”
Israelite communities across the world honor this Law as did the Israelites during the time of Christ. Hypocrisy was the only problem Christ had with certain leaders.
Matthew 23:5: “But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments.” Matthew 23:28: “Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.”
Israelite sisters were also reminded of this in 1 Timothy 2:9:”In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety,… ”
The new covenant in Christ gives us a willing heart and mind to be obedient to the Most High’s laws.
Hebrews 8:10: “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people.”.
Now someone may say that we do not have to wear fringes any longer since we have the Holy Spirit from Christ to remind us of His commandments. Yes, it’s true that the Holy Spirit can remind us of The Most High’s commandments but it is also true that one of The Lord’s commandments is to wear fringes! It is also true that men of old such as King David had the Holy Spirit, yet they were also obedient to wear fringes. King David, Moses and all the righteous men and women of Israel wore fringes to remind them of the commandments as the Lord said. Today we are not on the same spiritual level as our fore parents yet our carnal minds [Satan] whispers to us “You have Christ in you, you don’t need them silly fringes thing no more” and we wonder why our walk is such a constant struggle. So much that our evil minds begin to twist scripture, to justify our disobedience to God’s laws.
We can also be certain that Christ had the Holy Spirit. Yet he also wore fringes.
Matthew 9:20: “And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:”
The “hem” of his garment is translated “fringe” in both the Hebrew and Greek.
Matthew 14:35: ” And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;”
verse 36: “And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.”
Mark 6:56: ” And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.”
The “border” of his garment has the same translation for “fringe.”
1 John 2:5: “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.”
verse 6: “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”
Christ wore the fringes and we walk as He walked, yes in love and obedience to God’s Laws. Then surely the Most High can still use the law of fringes to remind us of the commandments today. Fringes also allow us to recognize other obedient Israelites and give us an opportunity to teach the gospel when asked why we wear them.
There is mercy in Christ; many of us may have strict job settings that don’t allow us to wear fringes to be seen, the Lord knows and understands. Just as Queen Esther had to wear the Persian woman’s apparel and crown which she hated.
In the Apocrypha Esther 14:15: “Thou knowest all things, O Lord; thou knowest that I hate the glory of the unrighteous, and abhor the bed of the uncircumcised, and of all the heathen.”
verse 16: “Thou knowest my necessity: for I abhor the sign of my high estate, which is upon mine head in the days wherein I shew myself, and that I abhor it as a menstruous rag, and that I wear it not when I am private by myself.”
Don’t be ashamed to keep the Law of the Most High concerning fringes when you’re at liberty to do so.
Luke 9:26: “For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.”
Matthew 4:4: “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
